Supporting Local Law Enforcement on LGBT-Inclusive Trainings

In several cities, mayors are working closely with their local police chiefs to ensure that the department has fully LGBT-inclusive policies for all members – and to develop training curriculum for the police academy that specifically addresses the concerns of LGBT residents. Too often, LGBT individuals are at a greater risk of being victimized based on their sexual orientation or gender identity, and it’s vital that local law enforcement understands the community and the specific considerations to keep in mind when working with LGBT residents.

One recent example is in Providence, Rhode Island, where Mayor Jorge Elorza is working with Providence Police Chief Hugh Clements to develop LGBT-specific training materials for law enforcement officials. “Now, more than ever, it is important that every member of our community feels safe and protected,” Mayor Elorza said.
